"We can state that bentonite is the most interesting raw material of our times": Mr Savelli wrote in 1942. He discovered fields on the Island of Ponza and was the first to introduce the term Bentonite in Italy.
Today, this mineral is used in different areas and we, thanks to our long-standing experience of over half a century, are able to supply mixtures of bentonites to meet all needs. It's many years our firm has intensified the research on bentonite: we have acquired new knowledge through research and the experiences we matured in years of practice. Our bentonites, both Italian and foreign have rewarded our efforts. Using many different supplies we can select the most suitable quality to satisfy all needs. Bentonite is montmorillonitic clay with colloidal features. It's main quality is to puff up in water to occupy a much greater volume than the one it had when dry and to create tixotropic gels even when the ratio bentonite / water is very low.
Bentonite comes from the modification of volcanic ashes: it is a devitrification in a watery environment with the separation of a part of silica, followed by the crystallization of the montmorillonite, its chemical composition depends from the composition of the water where the volcanic ashes fell.
The capability bentonite has to puff up in water is due to the ionic exchange caused by the presence of cations that are exchangeable in the reticular layers of the montmrillonite.
